Bible Verses and Scriptures About The Birth of Jesus Christ - Read what Scripture tells us about the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem, the nativity story and why we have the Christian celebration of Christmas.
Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Luke 1:35
The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.


Matthew 1:18-24
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.  Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.  But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."  All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:  "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us."  When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.


Luke 2:9-14
An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."  Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,  "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."


Isaiah 9:6-7
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.


Luke 2:1-20
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.  (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)  And everyone went to his own town to register.  So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.  He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.  While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,  and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.  And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."  Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,  "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."  When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."  So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.  When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,  and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.  But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.  The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.


Matthew 2:1-12
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem  and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."  When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.  When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.  "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:  " 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' "  Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.  He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."  After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.  When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.  On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.  And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Godly Counsel: Scriptures For Today's World

(2 Corinthians 10:5)

Thinking : mental processing; evaluating and reasoning

Our thinking  is greatly influenced by our underlying beliefs.  We have a choice.  We can either believe the lies taught by the world (and the devil ), or believe the truths taught in the Bible, and as manifested in the perfect life of Jesus Christ.

As Christians, God expects us to bring our thinking  into line with the truth  (See Lesson 29).  He pays close attention to our thinking .  We cannot hide our thoughts from God.

Importantly, God has provided us with free will, and the tools and means by which we can begin to change our thought life: by dili­gently studying the truth  as revealed in the Holy Bible;  by focus­ing our thoughts on the life and teachings of Jesus; and by pray­ing for guidance  from the Holy Spirit  (the Spirit of truth ).  In the end, our thinking  is transformed in remarkable and wonder­ful ways, as we become more and more Christ-like.

 

Synopsis


God is deeply concerned about our thinking .1  We cannot hide our thoughts from God.2  He is aware of everything we are think­ing and knows what we are going to say before we speak.3


I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind.
(Jeremiah 17:10)1

Yet you know me, O Lord; you see me and test
my thoughts about you.
(Jeremiah 12:3)2

Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.
(Psalm 139:4) 3   


God detests the thoughts of the wicked, but is pleased with thoughts of the pure in heart.4 Each and every thought we have, whether good or bad, is judged by the standard of God’s Word, as contained in the Holy Bible.5

As Christians, we are born with a sinful nature ,6 but God has given us the free will to focus our minds on evil , or focus our  thoughts on God and truth . 

The sinful mind is hostile to God, and does not submit to His law.7   Those who live according to their sinful nature  have their minds focused on what their sinful nature  desires. On the other hand, those who live according to the Spirit have their minds fo­cused on what the Spirit desires.8

The mind of the sinful man leads to death, but the mind con­trolled by the Spirit leads to life and peace.9 If we are Spirit filled and focus on God’s Word, we will truly have the mind of Christ.10space

The Lord detests the thoughts of the wicked,
but those of the pure are pleasing to him.  (Proverbs 15:26)4

For the word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any
double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul
and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts
and attitudes of the heart.  (Hebrews 4:12)5

Surely I was sinful from at birth, sinful from the time
my mother conceived me.  (Psalm 51:5)6

The sinful mind is hostile to God.  It does not submit to God’s
 law, nor can it do so.  Those controlled by the sinful nature  
cannot please God.  (Romans 8:7-8)7

Those who live according to the sinful nature  have their minds
set on what that nature desires; but those who live in
accordance with the Spirit have their minds set
on what the Spirit desires.
(Romans 8:5)8

The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:6)9

But we have the mind of Christ.
(1 Corinthians 2:16)10

Fortunately, God provides a great deal of advice about how we, as Christians, can take control of our thinking  and make it pleasing to Him.

God’s Guidance


First of all, we are to monitor our thoughts and  reject and de­molish any thoughts that run contrary to God’s truth ; we are to take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.11  We are to work  to get control over our thinking  and stop thinking  in immature, childish ways.12,13

We are to stop dwelling on the past and on things we can’t change.14 We are to focus our thoughts on positive aspects of our lives rather than on the negative—that is, we are to think about whatever is: true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, ex­cellent or praiseworthy.15 

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself
up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
(2 Corinthians 10:5)11

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child,
I reasoned like a child.  When I became a man,
I put childish ways behind me.
(1 Corinthians 13:11)12

Brothers, stop thinking  like children.  In regard to evil  be infants, but in your thinking  be adults.
(1 Corinthians 14:20)13

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. 
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining
toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the
prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 3:13-14)14

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble,
whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or
praiseworthy—think about such things.
(Philippians 4:8)15


We are to stop thinking  as the world thinks, and no longer con­form to the pattern of thought that is prevalent in our society.16

We are to strive to keep our conscience clear be­fore God.17  We are to focus our minds on the truth  as revealed by the Holy Spirit ,18 and fix our thoughts on Jesus,19  the author and per­fecter of our faith .20

When we get our thinking  straight and aligned with the spiritual truths, healthy emotions naturally follow.  For example, the fruits of the Spirit are: love, joy , peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.21

In contrast, if we believe in the lies and the irrational beliefs taught by the world (and by the devil), we will experience negative emotions such as anger (Lesson 4), anxiety (Lesson 5), and de­pression (Lesson 12).  The Bible abounds with information on how to avoid experi­encing these emotions by focusing on the truth , as revealed in the Scriptures .

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be
able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good,
pleasing and perfect will.
(Romans 12:2)16

So I strive always to keep my conscience clear
before God and man.
(Acts 24:16)17

But when he, the Spirit of truth , comes,
he will guide you into all truth .
(John 16:13)18

Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess .
(Hebrews 3:1)19

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus,
the author and perfector of our faith .
(Hebrews 12:2)20

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy , peace, kindness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
(Galatians 5:22-23)21


Finally, our underlying beliefs (and the thinking  that flows from our beliefs), can have a profound influ­ence on our behavior—that is, the actions we take as Christians. God does not want us to simply hear the word and believe; He wants us to put our beliefs into practice.22 

The Scriptures  tell us that faith  without action is dead.23 It is not enough to talk about our faith  to others;24 God requires us to live out our faith  in our own behavior and in our actions toward our fellow man.25-27

One of the greatest testimonies of our faith  in action is our love for others.  As we come to accept and obey the truth  of the Bible and start to live out the truth  in our thinking  and in our behavior, we will naturally start to love one another deeply, from the heart.28

My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word
and put it into practice.
(Luke 8:21)22

As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith  without deed is dead.
(James 2:26)23

Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue
but with actions and in truth .
(1 John 3:18)24

A person is justified by what he does and not by faith  alone.
(James 2:24)25

Now that you know these things,
you will be blessed if you do them.
(John 13:17)26

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. 
Do what it says.
(James 1:22)27

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth  
so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one

Psalm 147:3
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.


Isaiah 25:8
The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces.

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.


Isaiah 61:3
To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory.            
Jeremiah 31:13
The young women will dance for joy, and the men—old and young—will join in the celebration. I will turn their mourning into joy. I will comfort them and exchange their sorrow for rejoicing.

There is hope and it is found in Jesus Christ. Jesus loves us and cares for us. He brings peace and comfort when He comes into our lives.  All we have to do is invite Him into our hearts...

Voices - How to know the difference between the Lord’s voice and other voices.

VOICES – TESTING
Psalms 1:1 “Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners,…”
The ungodly has a voice which leads the sinner. This is their own spirit, the spirit of flesh or the spirit of the devil.
Romans 8:15  “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear;…”
Only the evil spirit causes fear (II Timothy 1:7).
I Corinthians 14:7 “And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?”
I Corinthians 14:10  “There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.”
Every voice has significance!
I Corinthians 14:11  Paul says, “I know not the meaning of the voice…”
Seek out agreement in His Word! When God guides you or gives you direction, He does not nullify the scriptures, neither will He change them to accommodate that voice!
Hebrews 8:10    “…I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts:…”
I John 2:20 “But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.”
The inward witness of the Spirit is what leads you into all truth and Jesus is the Spirit of Truth!
I John 2:27 “But the anointing which ye have received of him abide in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, AND IS TRUTH, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him” (John 10:27).
John 10:3, 27    “…the sheep hear His voice: and He calls His own sheep by name, and leads them out. My sheep hear my voice…”
VOICES – “Was that you, Lord?”
How to know the difference between the Lord’s voice and other voices.
John 10:3,5,27      “He calls His own sheep by name…the sheep follow Him, for they know His voice. My sheep hear My voice and I know them and they follow Me.”
John 18:37 “Everyone that is of the Truth knows My voice.”
I Corinthians 12:3 “No man can say that Jesus is Lord but by the Holy Ghost.”
Revelations 19:10 “The testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy.”
WHEN THE LORD SPEAKS, the following is evident:
AN INWARD KNOWING. Sometimes He speaks words not familiar to you or not common to your vocabulary (I Corinthians 2:13).
PEACE comes into your soul and you are at rest (John 14:27).
TRUSTING with all your heart results (Proverbs 3:5-6)
CONFIDENCE AND ASSURANCE follow (Isaiah 30:15).
AGREEMENT WITH THE WORD OF GOD, the Bible. God will not violate His Word for anyone’s convenience; so the message must be checked with the Bible (II Peter 1:19).
CONFIRMATION. God always confirms His words to you, especially in guidance for action (II Corinthians 13:1).
THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST. Satan may use the word “god,” for he is the “god of this world” (II Corinthians 4:4), but he will not call Jesus Christ “Lord” (I Corinthians 12:3).
CLARITY. Jesus always speaks clearly and in line with His Word, so that you KNOW it is He (II Corinthians 1:20).
WHEN THE DEVIL OR ANOTHER EVIL SPIRIT SPEAKS, the following is evident:
DOUBT, FEAR, DISCOMFORT (II Timothy 1:7; Romans 8:15-16).
CONFLICT, RESTLESSNESS, NO PEACE (James 3:14-18; Isaiah 48:22).
QUESTIONING, WONDERING if it is the Lord (Romans 14:23).
LACK OF CLARITY, CONFUSION. If you have to “work it out” forget it! Satan is the “author of confusion” not God (James 3:16; I Corinthians 14:33).
NEGATION OF THE LORD’S COMMANDS to us personally or through Scripture. When God speaks, Satan soon says the exact opposite, trying to snatch away the Word (Matthew 13:4, 18, 24-30; Genesis 3:4).
LORDSHIP OF CHRIST DENIED, discounted (I John 4:1-6).
CONDEMNATION, GUILT, DISCOURAGEMENT. Satan brings up sins that have already been confessed, forgiven, and forgotten by God (Romans 8:1;  John 3:20; Revelation 12:10).
WHEN THE FLESH-SELF SPEAKS, the following is evident:
HESITATION. Self has to think before it speaks. God’s Word to us flows easily without any preconceptions due to our carnal mind (Romans 8:5-7, 26-27).
DECEPTION. We can be led astray by our own hearts since we do not fully understand ourselves (Jeremiah 17:9-10). So we must feed on the Word until we become mature (Hebrews 5:12).
DOUBLE-MINDEDNESS. Wanting two opposite things at the same time results in instability (James 1:8). Jesus gives us the “single eye” (Matthew 6:22-23) that chooses the Kingdom first (Matthew 6:33) so that we can really want to do God’s will (Philippians 2:13). It is the indwelling Spirit that enables us to do this (John 14:16; 16:13).

UNREGENERATE DESIRES. The voice sounds like our own, with our own inflections and intonations, and speaks of the same old desires that you used to indulge in (James 1:13-16). Such desires arise from the flesh, and we must consider ourselves dead to those desires (Romans 6:1-4).
